Fibreoptic injection of oesophageal varices.

چکیده
A new technique for injecting sclerosant into oesophageal varices uses a flexible gastroscope. Once the gastroscope has been inserted a flexible tube with a window cut into its distal end is pushed down over the gastroscope until a varix protrudes through the window. The varix can then be injected with a needle passed down the biopsy channel of the gastroscope. Once the varices have all been injected in this way the tube is advanced to compress the injection sites and so help control bleeding. This method, using a flexible gastroscope, has proved easier and safer than the traditional method using a rigid gastroscope.

Broncho-oesophageal fistula: a late complication of endoscopic variceal sclerotherapy.
A case is reported of delayed broncho-oesophageal fistula presenting several weeks after fibreoptic injection sclerotherapy for oesophageal varices in a patient with chronic active hepatitis who eventually died from bronchopneumonia. Such serious complications of injection sclerotherapy should be kept in mind with the increasing popularity of this method of early treatment of bleeding oesophage...
متن کاملEndoscopic injection sclerotherapy for bleeding varices in children with intrahepatic and extrahepatic portal venous obstruction: benefit of injection tract embolisation.
BACKGROUND The outcome of sclerotherapy for bleeding oesophageal varices may be influenced by injection technique. In a previous study at our institution, sclerotherapy was associated with a high re-bleeding rate and oesophageal ulceration. Embolisation of the injection tract was introduced in an attempt to reduce injection-related complications. METHODS To determine the outcome and effective...

متن کاملLongterm outcome after injection sclerotherapy for oesophageal varices in children with extrahepatic portal hypertension.
A consecutive series of 36 children with bleeding from oesophageal varices secondary to extrahepatic portal hypertension was successfully treated by endoscopic injection sclerotherapy and followed up over a mean period of 8.7 years after variceal obliteration. There were no deaths from portal hypertension or its treatment and morbidity related to oesophageal sclerotherapy was minimal. Endoscopi...
متن کاملFactors affecting successful endoscopic sclerotherapy for oesophageal varices.
Forty patients with bleeding oesophageal varices were studied during treatment by endoscopic sclerotherapy to discover what factors determine successful outcome. Large varices required more injections than small varices for obliteration, and rebleeding during treatment occurred only in patients with large varices. Radiological studies with sclerosant contrast mixture showed that in two groups o...
